While your daily oral hygiene routine is certainly important for preserving the health of your mouth, it is still only one piece of the puzzle. The American Dental Association also recommends having a dental checkup and cleaning administered every six months.

Here at our dental office in Bessemer, Alabama, each dental checkup is designed to address all of the aspects of maintaining good oral health.

This starts with a dental hygienist performing a thorough dental cleaning. During this phase of the appointment, they will use professional tools and techniques to remove all traces of hardened tartar from your teeth. This will also include a dental polishing treatment to remove minor surface stains from the teeth in your smile.

During the next phase of the appointment, Dr. Pitner and Dr. Findlay will perform a thorough dental exam. If they detect any cavities or periodontal health problems, our dentists will discuss the treatment options available with you. This might include preventative treatments such as administering a simple fluoride treatment or applying dental sealants.

At the end of the dental exam our dentists will perform a basic oral cancer screening. This will involve an examination of your tongue, neck, cheek, and throat to look for early signs of oral or pharyngeal cancer. If you’ve experienced any discomfort in these areas, be sure to let Dr. Pitner and Dr. Findlay know about them.
