With good oral hygiene practices, your teeth can resist bacterial tooth decay, thanks to the mineral density of your tooth enamel. If you consume acidic beverages on a regular basis, or you are lax with your daily oral hygiene regimen, it could gradually start to weaken your tooth enamel.

This process, known as demineralization, can increase your chances of suffering multiple cavities as well as tooth sensitivity problems.

If your dentist at Pitner Family Dentistry notices signs of weakened tooth enamel during your regular dental exam in Bessemer, Alabama they might recommend a fluoride treatment. This is a fast and easy way to restore some of the mineral strength of your tooth enamel.

Our dentists can administer the treatment at the end of the exam, by pouring a small amount of concentrated fluoride gel into trays that are held in your mouth for a few minutes. It’s best to avoid eating or drinking for up to an hour after the treatment. This will allow the fluoride to deeply penetrate deep into your tooth enamel.

If you don’t have daily access to municipal water or your teeth show significant signs of demineralization, our dentists might also prescribe fluoride supplements. This often comes in the form of a special fluoride-fortified toothpaste, or mouthwash.
